A question that Bryan often hears people is: “What does your wife think about …?” The question usually refers to his jokes, sense of humor, corny puns, and the like. We’re always surprised at the question because it implies that I disapprove of something he’s doing or saying.

Today — on our 13th wedding anniversary — I’m setting the record straight.

What do I think about Bryan’s jokes, puns and humor?

For every bad pun Bryan has made, he’s also made me laugh so hard I cried. His sense of humor is what drew me to him in at a student honor society meeting at San Diego State University in April 1996. I would be sad if he wasn’t that way! And while I may not love every pun, I love Bryan and I’m happy I’m still married to my best friend.

It’s crazy to think how much can happen in 13 years. We bought two homes (still living in one). We both finished our master’s degrees in communication. Bryan made the decision to attend – and graduate from – law school. We’ve seen recessions, change of presidents, 9/11, and technology change in ways I never thought possible. We’ve both had many jobs, employers and dreams. We’ve lost family and friends. We adopted two dogs and two cats; only one dog and one cat are still with us. And of course, we brought Sophie into the world.

Many things have changed in those 13 years. Yet so much remains the same. We still love each other. We respect each other. We’re still friends. We don’t try to change each other. We like hanging out together, yet we have our own hobbies and interests (it helps that reading and books are a mutual love). We have the same goals in life and for our family. I’m still happy for him when he has a win (and vice versa). And he still makes me laugh!

In these 13 years, have things been tough? Of course! But life is tough. I’d rather brave it with someone who makes me laugh along the way!

  1. I love this, Leah! I have laughed over the years (many more than yours) at the many times one or the other of us has been asked that question… or someone has said something to my husband about “the wife” or commented to one of us about something the other has done — like we aren’t fully aware of it or maybe that it will make waves… through it all we keep laughing, too. Here’s to marriage!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY — love seeing your wedding pic, it’s so beautiful.

  2. Congratulations!!!
I love a man with a sense of humor, Leah. That’s how my husband won me! 😉 Laughter helps keep life in perspective.

  3. Your husband sounds like a fun guy! I enjoyed reading this post and how happy you two are with each other. Some unhappy marriages are that way because one person is trying to change their partner, and you just can’t make someone change. Happy anniversary!
